About Us

In 1980, a small group of local history buffs had a dream of preserving Gothenburg’s heritage. They began gathering items and information representing the history of the area. The group was known as the Pony Express Historical Society which still exists today. The society used the information that was collected to publish a book that tells about many businesses and families who have lived in the Gothenburg area. These may be purchased at the museum or at the Chamber of Commerce office.

In the fall of 2006, another part of the dream became a reality. A building was purchased to house the historical items, pictures, and memorabilia of Gothenburg’s past. This building became ‘The Gothenburg Historical Museum’. Members have visited other museums and talked with curators to discover how best to conserve the artifacts entrusted to the society and museum for the future. Board members and volunteers have attended many trainings to gain knowledge in the preservation and display of valuable artifacts.

Residents of  the area as well as travelers are encouraged to visit the museum to see our ever-growing collections. It is great to see the interest visitors have shown for this community effort.  Anyone interested in helping with the various projects at the museum are welcome to join the society  or just drop in to help out.

The goal is to display items from the Gothenburg area as well as our recently acquired collection from the Platte Valley Museum. We are grateful to Kieth Buss for donating his lifelong collection from the Platte Valley Museum. It is housed in the lower level for everyone to see. While at the museum, browse over quaint gift area for books by local authors and items of local interest.

The museum is open Wednesday thru Saturday from 10:00 to 4:00 and other times by appointment. Contact Anne Anderson at the Chamber Office 308-537-3399. We wish to thank all the volunteers who have helped throughout the years. They have donated many productive hours of service. Those interested in volunteering at the museum may contact the museum at 308-537-4212,   the Chamber Office, or by contacting board members listed on the contact page.
